Senior citizen drives into crowd in Essen: eleven injured

Dramatic scenes at a streetcar stop in essen: an 81-year-old woman drove her car into a crowd of people there on saturday. Twelve people were injured, three of them with life-threatening injuries, a police spokesman said.

It was initially unclear how the incident could have happened. According to initial findings, the police assume that it was an accident.

The victims rose against 17.15 o’clock just at the stop gervinusstrabe from the streetcar or on, when the silver-colored car drove apparently unbraked into the crowd. Eleven people were injured and hospitalized, including the 81-year-old woman and her passenger, also an elderly man.

Police and fire department immediately received numerous emergency calls. When the emergency services arrived with a large contingent at the busy intersection in the district of frohnhausen, a terrible picture was presented, said the police spokesman. "Injured people were lying on the road everywhere."Many witnesses were in shock.

Numerous passers-by had already taken care of the people before emergency doctors and sanitary workers took over the care. "All the injured really did have someone by their side, it was quite exemplary," said a fire department spokesman. "It often helps if someone simply talks the injured person through it."

According to police, the bus stop is in the middle of the road, so passengers have to cross the carriageway. There is a traffic light for the following cars. Police now want to interview witnesses to determine how the incident could have happened.
